About Me
My name is Anurith Kusunam
I'm currently a Senior at Biotechnology High School in New Jersey and I'm passionate about healthcare.
My interest in eyes started when I had surgery for a "lazy eye" as a kid. Since then, I’ve worked hard to understand how the brain and body work together. I spend my time volunteering at a hospital, working as an EMT with Morganville & Keyport EMS, and providing support for patients in hospice care. I also love martial arts and have been a black belt for over nine years and frequently lead classes and perform for the dojo. I want to use my scientific and interpersonal skills to help patients understand their conditions and empower them.

Etiology-Dependent Treatment Responses in Amblyopia: The Role of Cortical Suppression and Neural Connectivity
My research paper explores how different etiologies, or causes, of amblyopia(lazy eye) affects treatment success for both conventional and modern treatments. Different causes of lazy eye have different physiological effects on the brain and visual system, and thus, each cause was hypothesized to have a distinct treatment that had the best success with reversing the disorder. This study combines optical science with neuroscience and considers both in analysis, due to the important role of the brain in the visual tract. This paper is also inspired from my personal experiences with amblyopia as a child, and was done with mentorship from assistant professor Dr. Jobin Varkey of the University of Southern California.

To raise awareness about visual disorders and the importance of early diagnosis, I created Vision Awareness Kits containing educational brochures, my personal experience, information on when to seek further evaluation, and complementary items. A breakdown of whats in the kits is below!
